Greenhouse Coordinator

Variety – the Children’s Charity of the Delaware Valley was originally founded as the Philadelphia area Variety Club in 1935. The organization has a rich history of employing unique development campaigns in its mission to improve the quality of life for children with disabilities. Many Philadelphians have fond memories of the iconic WPVI–TV6 Variety Club Telethon hosted by Monty Hall; while others recall the annual ‘Old News Boys Day,’ in which volunteers, including many of Philadelphia’s mayors, stood on street corners to sell special ‘Happiness Editions’ of the Philadelphia Inquirer. In recent years, a commitment to contemporary and robust fundraising has yielded generous support from individuals, corporations, and foundations and helped to raise tens of millions of dollars to sustain the organization into the 21st century.
Variety is seeking a full time Greenhouse Coordinator to manage the gardens and greenhouses year-round on its 77-acre campus.  The Coordinator will work closely with the Director of Programming to plan each growing season, the management of land, non-certified wildlife habitats, and other outdoor spaces to ensure that the spaces are accommodating and accessible for use for educational training programs for children and young adults with disabilities. This position should blend educational opportunities for students while also maintaining a farm that produces enough produce to engage the local community in pop up produce shops throughout the year, but especially in the summer.
Candidates for this position must be flexible and understanding of the functional limitations of the participants Variety supports while still encouraging growth and challenging participants to develop new skills and abilities.  Candidates should be open and willing to develop new and creative ways to maximize land use and garden/greenhouse use. Housing may be available as part of the compensation package. Position will support Facilities team as appropriate and seasonally.
Experience:  horticulture farm management, greenhouse management, and planning; proficiency in computer skills; empathetic and patient; familiar with irrigation and pest control using organic materials; able to operate equipment; education experience a plus

Education:  BS in Agribusiness or other closely related field preferred
